C.R.A.F.T. # 75: DIY Business Cards #2

I love my new business cards, but they have a semi sad sad story attached to them… not to mention an issue [more on that later]. I made them with the intentions of going to Creative Estates. I won a ticket from The Idea Room, got an airline ticket with miles for $7.00,  found 3 awesome roomies (THANK YOU, Linda, for organizing) and then… tried to tackle the work schedule. Needless to say, I could not make it happen :( But, I did get a fun craft project out of it!

[I made THESE business cards to attend Bloggy Boot Camp in Austin!]

Materials: Paint chips, doilies, PSA Essentials stamp, glue, adhesive mailing labels

Doilies rip very easily…I only used the lacy part:

Glue lacy part on paint chip:

I used my beloved PSA Stamp purchased through Expressionery:
 Here is the front:
And here is the back:

I used these from Office Max:

You get 750 labels for about $15!
AND
Making them on the computer is super easy if you use Microsoft Word…Each package has a template #…I happen to buy Avery template # 5260…All you do is go to Tools, click labels, and find your corresponding number…then the labels automatically pop up on your screen!
I stuck them on the back of my paint chip with a square of scrapbook paper and voila!

The issue: The stamp smudges :/ No matter how long you wait for the stamp to dry! I have not tried anything yet… I’m thinking mod podge the front?
Does anyone have any suggestions to help my little business cards?

Comments

  1. so sad about your smudging :( b/c this is an inspired idea! I will ask Libby over at the PSA Stamp Camp to weigh in on possible solutions. There must be some coating the paint chip that is keeping the ink from setting. We have experienced this at Expressionery.com where some papers (really the inks/toners/coatings they have on them) just don't play nicely with a surface ink.

  2. these are so cute!! I love the doileys!

  3. Those are really neat! I like the fact that they have some "texture" to them with the doily!

  4. I love these business cards. they are so cute. don't know what to do about the smudging, what a bummer.

  5. Very cute cards, shame you don't get to use them at the Creative Estates.

I've had ink smudge before, I think some inks just don't get on with shiny surfaces. I've used a heat gun to dry my inks before, perhaps this might work!

If the ink is still wet would modge podge make it run? What a bummer, 'cause the cards are fab!

  6. SO clever and cute! LOVE.

  7. I really love these. Crafting is what you do, and your cards reflect that. Genius.

  8. Cute cards! I've heard a spray of hairspray keeps the ink from smearing…not sure if it's before or after…but I think it works…good luck!

  9. It might be the texture of the paint chips that makes the ink smudge. Maybe a clear acrylic spray? I know the ModPodgers say if you print something on an inkjet you have to spray it with that or the Mod Podge will make it bleed and run….

  10. I LOVE THESE! SO CUTE! I'm going to do something similar, I think. Your cards are already done, but wet embossing would look nice and there would be no smudging (but would take longer to make). Did you try to heat set the ink? Perhaps a spray fixative would stop it from smudging…. sorry your trip didn't work out.

  11. Very cute idea with the paint chips!! I remember in art class when we had issues with things smudging (like with charcoal drawings) we would spray the whole thing with aresol hair spray as a fixative. It's worth a (cheap) try?

  12. Adorable! I am not sure what you could do to prevent the smudge. I think if you did Mod Podge over it, that will cause it to smudge- I've had it happen to me in the past.

I didn't know you couldn't come to CE anymore! Big bummer!

  13. The answer is hair spray! Seriously, spray it with hair spray and no smudging.

    Really cute business cards!

  14. I would love to invite you over and share on my WhateverWednesday linkie party. Hope to see you there!

  15. Your business cards have got to be my most favorite thing you make!

  16. So cute! But I'm so sad you can't come to CE anymore! We'll be thinking of you!

  17. I am SO sad I can;t make it to CE :( I LOVE meeting other bloggers that like to talk creative and blog :) MY real life friends sometimes think I'm crazy!

  20. Hi…I am new here, but I love this blog!!! What about a spray finish? Hairspray tends to make ink run. But a spray varnish from a craft store might work.

  21. I love it with the doily, what a cute touch!

  22. You might try a spray fixitive…same idea as hairspray, but probably less sticky.

  23. Love them! Great idea!

  24. If you don't mind – I am so totally going to steal this idea!!! I LOVE IT!!! You're a genious!!

  25. BTW – where did you get your stamp from?

  26. So great! Love the use of the paint chips!!
(found you on the Shabby Chic Thursday linky!)

  29. these are freaking adorable. i would probably just use them for gift tags. i love it when people put their address on the gift tags…makes thank you card writing so much faster.

  30. for smudging I would give acrylic sealer or Triple Thick a try or you might need to just print your design on clear stickers instead.

  31. Come on!? This is so awesome! How stinkin cute and creative. I say, Mod Podge, or could you print out a similar image onto clear labels and use a round punch to punch 'em out and then stick them on the front?

  44. Dontcha just love paint chips? Great job!

  45. That's awesome! Love it!!! :)

  46. Great idea!

  47. This was so clever! They look great. But where do you find doilies after Valentine's Day?

  48. These are super awesome! I love it! My thoughts for the ink problem: try Staz On ink – it's made to stay on surfaces that usually don't ink well, or use a spray sealer, mod podge might leave you with a big smeared mess!

  49. Found your blog through tip junkie and this is really cute…Now about the ink..could you iron on over it with clear plastic wrap or something like that?..I have seen it done on other projects..of course have a fabric protecting your iron…( just a guess I am not good at paper crafting yet.

  58. Love this! And try 'StazOn' ink. That should do the trick. Plus it's inexpensive and available at all craft stores.

  59. Although…that looks like a self-inking stamp so that probably won't work.

  60. Great idea! I love the custom stamper.

  61. Christine says:

Awesome! I’m always looking for lovely ‘quick and dirty’ crafts for my senior ‘artisans’ group. This beautiful item fits the bill perfectly – I think the doily not only gives it a touch of class but also speaks to the seniors in a huge way ie past fashion, interior design as well as antique or Victorian era ideals. Your little paint chip now delivers a whole trip down memory lane! (Of course, I’ll make sure I spray them with hair spray first – thanks for the heads up on the smudging) Blessings..

  62. Great ideas you post here.thanks a lot.
