I officially love the door organizer. (it was featured on Design Sponge on 5/10/2012 in it’s original form!) But, now with the magnetic knife addition and some re- organizing, I really, really love it. I’m seriously considering open kitchen shelving in my future home. It makes putting things away so simple. Here’s the door with it’s new arrangement…
Here is the original how to organize a kitchen on a door post. A side by side will make it make more sense. You know that silly game in the back of People magazine where you try to spot all o the differences between the 2 photos? Well, here’s my crafty version : )
Fun game, right? ha! There were lots of little tweaks on the ol’ door, but here are the main ones:
- magnetic knife strip
- take out menus in the wire caddy- we love the easy access
- re arranged the measuring cups, pot holder, wire baskets, hooks to fit in the magnetic knife strip
The magnetic knife strip was the reason for all of the changes. #7 on the make this kitchen usable list was clean out the dresser. The knives were floating in the dresser. Dangerous, I know. We like to live on the edge here in casa de Dorobek. Basically, we have one drawer and silverware won it over. That drawer can’t even hold a regular sized silverware caddy, much less 6 extra steak knives and the fancy cutco knife my parents got us for Christmas. So, we stored them in the free dresser Andy acquired, right next to pans, tin foil, zip locks, take out menus, and other random kitchen necessities. See for yourself…
The door got a little clearner with out teh knives and take out menus… but it’s not perfect yet. Anywho, the magnetic knife strip comes in 2 sizes at out Bed, Bath, and Beyond (this is where we had a gift card)… 12 and 18 inches. Since we used a shutter door, our magnetic strip only had a few hanging options versus using a solid wood door where you could hang this sucker anywhere. Knife strip options for our door:
- At the very top of the door (where I’d already hung all of my command clear hooks and gadgets)
- In the middle of the door (where the frame and command clear caddy lives and since they’re knives we thought higher was safer)
- The strip had to be 13-14 in to fit perfect across one side of the shutter (could not find one that size)
- Or we had to hang it on the diagonal
Diagonal won out. Plus we liked how it emphasizes the yellow paint line. I helped Andy trace the holes, and he drilled that bad boy into our door.
This picture basically just proves we’re nuts. Andy is drilling, and I am taking a picture while holding the vacuum to suck up the drill mess.
With knife strip secured, I stuck the knives on and moved everything else around.
The kitchen to-do list is slowly but surely getting tackled. Here’s what’s left:
Research and buy new dishes (I had no idea there were so many kinds… stone ware, fiesta ware, Corelle, porcelain, bone ware!)(more on that here)Container for bag spices in the large food cabinetContainer for Tassimo pods to clear out the bottom shelf of the small food cabinet(more on that here)A home for pot holders and kitchen towels (possible a wall storage system?)(door organizer!)- Deal with the random stuff on top of the cabinets- eeek, that’s a big one.
Get rid of/ organize random stuff next to dresser(more on that here)Clean out and organize the dresser (Got a good start on this one, thus the half cross)Buy and mount a paper towel holder(more on that here)
One last look at the whole door since I think she’s so cute…
Anyone tweaking any projects at the moment? It’s amazing how adding one little thing that takes 10 minutes, can make such a difference.
