Cake Catastrophe

It was the fiance’s 30th birthday last weekend… and one of our good friends, Justin. Their birthdays are 2 days apart and we decided it would be fun to celebrate together! I had big plans of making 2 mini cakes, one for each with candles and all (I forgot the candles at home). I will let the pictures speak for themselves :)

plus, what good was one cake at this point anyway!

They turned out cute, and tasted great! That’s all that really matters, right?

This is the first time I have made cake balls that were not a disaster! (Baking is hard for me…I’m not patient enough!) I called Annie for the step by step in the melting process (that is where I usually go wrong) Here are my  Annie’s tips:
  • Do not microwave the wafers, use the DIY double broiler
  • It keeps the chocolate at a better consistency for longer and is super easy to re-heat when it gets clumpy
  • After you form the balls and place on cookie sheet, put them in the freezer for 10 minutes
  • This will ensure that there is no crumbling in the melted chocolate
  • Don’t try and use chocolate chips as a replacement for candy wafers… I know from experience!
Are you a good baker? Are you patient? What is your favorite thing to make? I’m really into rice crispie treats right now and cake balls moved up on the list! I want to try some combos. Do you have a must try cake ball combo?  More on the cake toppers and party decor tomorrow :)

p.p.s. Bakerella is coming to Austin on Dec. 1 for a book singing @ Book People! If you do not know who Bakerella is… you have to check out her cake pops!

Fried Oreos

Some say a picture is worth 1,000 words…

You’re drooling. I know it! They’re unbelievably delicious. Andy is an Oreo monster. He routinely eats whole rows of Oreos in a single sitting. Andy is typically an Oreo (and milk) purist, but he approved of the crispy fried covering and soft gooey Oreo center! The fried Oreo is an Annie special. She found the recipe at a tailgate! It’s super simple… and made with pancake batter. Make sure you get the pancake mix that is just add water…

Mix up the pancake batter. Cover Oreos in batter and place in frying pan with 1-2 inches of vegetable oil. Cook on each side until golden brown. You can see cooked v. uncooked in the picture below…

Roll in powder sugar and devour the deliciousness.

It’s like a funnel cake with a gooey Oreo middle!

Have you ever had a fried Oreo? A fried twinkie? I love fried pickles. Anyone else an unusual fried favorite? Or are you an Oreo purist too? I’d love to hear…

Real Party: Vintage Bird Inspired Baby Shower

Annie, Leah, and friends threw a super sweet, vintage inspired, peach and gray, bird baby shower with lots of personal touches and cute details… Perfect for the Pretty Parties Series.

There was even a photo booth with all kinds of props and chalkboard signs :)

The hostesses… in the photobooth… showing off some of the props!
(See here, here, here for free photo booth printables!)

It was a brunch…check out the cute tulle ball garland dangling on the front of the food table and yarn balls on top of the table :) Annie says Elmer’s glue works way better to make yarn balls than Stiffy’s fabric stifner!

The food card holders are corks wrapped in yarn with a small knife slit down the middle…

 I love mint chocolate anything…

A new twist on an old favorite…mimosas! Melting popsicles and champagne (or sprite :) YUM!

Annie decided to do a similar version of Who’s Who. Instead of making it a game with prizes, she used it more as a conversation starter. She had everyone email her their baby pictures before the shower and printed them out. She also had a list of shower attendees pinned up so guests could match names with pictures. See the sparkly clothespins below :)

The clothes pins were cure and sparkly :) Thanks to Martha Stewart glitter!
They also printed a sweet 5×7 tree and had everyone “leaf” a thumbprint and sign their name. This little memento will be framed and used in the babies room :) (See 25 unique guest book ideas)

How cute is the purple yarn wrapped letter V for Vivian?
As for party favors…. everyone took home a strawberry short cake in a jar :) They even modge podged the lids of all the jars and added a copper heart.

And last, but not least…here were the invitations from Sassy Photo Creations

What was your favorite detail? Have you ever done or thought about doing a photo booth at a party? I think that is such a fun idea :)
p.s. all of the pretty pictures were done by Leah, she’s got mad pho-tog skills :)
