5 ingredient salsa

We are salsa connoisseurs.
We’ve tried tons, made lots in the kitchen, and this one wins in all categories. It’s simple to make and d-leesh.
All you need is:
  • 1/4 of an onion
  • I large can of diced tomatoes
  • 1 jalapeno (we like it spicy)
  • 1/2 a bunch of cilantro
  • garlic salt (or garlic powder and salt, as shown above)
How to make salsa

My mom often forgets this step. It’s vital… otherwise you have runny salsa. You must drain the tomatoes.

Next, chop up the onion and jalapeno.

This is my least favorite part. You have to hand pick off the cilantro leaves. So all you have left are the stems…

Next, throw all of your ingredients into a blender/ food processor, and pulse. I typically pulse for 20 seconds at a time, about 4 times. You can always pulse more, but you there is no delete key.

I like it to look like this:

This nifty kitchen gadget makes me happy. Do you have one? It is a hands free can opener. My mom got it for me and my sister for Christmas 3 years ago. It has only needed new batteries one time in 3 years. I highly suggest it for all of your can opening needs :) You can buy the One Touch Can Opener on Amazon for $13.37! It only has 3 and half stars on Amazon. Crazy town. I give it 5 and half! It does leave sharp-ish edges on the can, but as long as your not drinking out of the can it’s not a big deal.

Do you love salsa? Do you make it at home or buy it at the store? What is your favorite store bought brand? We would buy pace picante, add another jalapeno and pulse it more in the thing you see above! Do you have a hands free can opener? Have you ever made taco soup? The can opener is a rock star for taco soup.

  1. mm thanks for the recipe! I love salsa, and am always disappointed with the canned stuff.

  2. You're welcome!

  3. Be careful with the hands free can opener. We had one and it was super handy until one day that battery died in the middle of opening a can! It was stuck on there and we had the throw the whole thing away.

  4. That is super easy girl,,, I love salsa too, but believe it or not I've never used canned tomatoes,, every….

This looks amazing, and will def solve all those times when I don't have fresh tomatoes on hand,,, woo hoo.

BUT girl, please tell me what the heck are you doing posting about salsa TODAY???

  5. yum!
our food processor broke and we are STILL in need of a new one ..
    this just reminded me !
it's been too long since homemade salsa .. thanks for sharing and reminding me to get off my bum and get a new food processor :)

  6. Cilantro stalks are usually really tender, so really you don't *have* to pick the leaves off! ;)
This would lead to a really nice guacamole as well, just add avocado and lemon juice and you're golden!

  7. Thanks for the recipe! Just the other night I was at a Mexican restaurant and thought to myself that I would like to make some homemade salsa. I am pinning this!

  8. Okay! That is super easy! I can do that! Thanks for sharing!! :)

  9. YUM!! Never thought about using canned tomatoes, how quick and easy is that?? Can't wait to try it, love spicy salsa too!

  10. Love your DRAIN THE TOMATOES shot :) Looks yummy, we buy locally made at the Farmer's Market.

  11. how much garlic salt do you add? Thank! I'm excited to try this!

  12. Maybe a tablespoon of each? I just sprinkle and sprinkle until I like it :)

I have made this recipe before I like it, but the salsa I have come to love I actually buy at Sam’s Club. It is called Italian Rose Fresh Salsa. It comes only in a 48oz. size. I can kill it in 2-3 days. Lol!!! They also make a Mango, but I have not tried it. Not sure if this is sold just in our region (Charleston, WV) or any Sam’s. A “must” try!!!
